GLOSSARY OF LENS TERMS

AF-S

Nikon's Silent Wave technology provides faster quieter focusing.

APO

Sigma's APO lenses use low dispersion glass to minimize chromatic aberration and give a crisper sharper picture.

DC

Sigma designation indicating the lens is only designed for cameras with a cropped sensor.

DG

Sigma's DG lenses are ideally suited to Digital SLR cameras.

DX

Nikon designation indicating the lens is only designed for cameras with a cropped sensor.

ED

Extra Low dispersion glass used in many Nikon lenses that will minimize chromatic aberration give a crisper sharper picture.

EF-S

Canon designation indicating the lens is only designed for cameras with a cropped APS-C sensor.

EX

Sigma's EX lenses offer superior optical and build quality.

G

Nikon's G-type lenses have no aperture ring and apertures must be selected from the camera body

HSM

Sigma's Hyper Sonic Motors provide faster quieter focusing.

IF

Internal Focusing

L

Canon's L (Luxury) lenses are their highest quality ( and most expensive) lenses. They are identifiable by a red stripe around the end of the barrel.

OS

Sigma's Optical Stabilising system helps minimize the effects of camera shake allowing you to shoot at lower shutter speeds and/or more challenging lighting conditions.

USM

Canon's Ultra Sonic Motors provide faster quieter focusing.

VR

Nikon's Vibration Reduction system helps minimize the effects of camera shake allowing you to shoot at lower shutter speeds and/or more challenging lighting conditions.
